I'm getting a new iPhone at the Apple store once the 3G ones come out on the 11th. When I'm there, I'll ask them if there's any way to reset your phone to use on O2. Maybe they'll know something.
Do they have any discount international dialing services over there? There's gotta be a way to get a phone over there and stay in touch on the cheap...
